Reason enough to seriously consider Shopify. Below you will find how to set up a Shopify webshop in 10 easy steps. Would you rather outsource something like this? Then SYSO can of course help you create a converting webshop .
Step 1 - Create a Shopify account
Getting started with Shopify is not difficult, you create a free account here for 14 days without a credit card. This way you can easily discover for yourself how user-friendly the webshop system is and what the possibilities are.
Step 2 - Choose a Shopify theme
The appearance of your webshop is determined by the layout. The default layout (the shell, called the 'theme' of your webshop at Shopify) is Dawn . It's actually a pretty good start, but there are dozens of free themes to choose from and nearly 100 beautiful themes in total, so be sure to look around.
In addition, for a paid theme you often pay around $200 - $350 once, which is relatively a very fair price, considering how incredibly extensive themes often are. Think of style variants, design, filtering, mega menus, extensive blog functions and many options to transform the theme to your own wishes and branding. In the Shopify webshop DIY online course , we discuss this subject in detail.
Step 3 - Translate the Shopify theme
The basis of Shopify is in English. Ideal if you want to start an English-language webshop, but if you want to translate everything into Dutch, that is of course also possible. All free themes can be converted to many different languages, including Dutch. The free Shopify themes anyway.
If the translation has not yet been fully implemented, there are still many system words and sentences that you need to translate (in an easy way without code). We also cover how you do that in the Shopify webshop DIY online course.
Step 4 - Make Shopify Multilingual
Step 5 - Link payment methods
iDEAL is number 1 in the Netherlands as an online payment method and in Belgium it is unmistakably BanContact. Until 2013, these methods could not be linked to a Shopify shop, which is why you sometimes read that Shopify is not an option for the Dutch or Belgian webshop owner. But as you now know, we have been able to use Shopify for almost 10 years thanks to Mollie and Shopify Payments.
Shopify Payments is the easiest way to accept payments online. You don't have to link an external payment provider, everything goes within the Shopify system. Shopify Payments automatically accepts all major payment methods, such as iDEAL and credit cards. Shopify Payments is now available for the Netherlands, see a list of rolled out countries here.
NICE : If you pay via Shopify Payments, you don't pay a fee!
Step 6 - Set up shipping costs and link shipping services
Do you sell services, products that fit through the letterbox or products that can only be sent with a parcel service? Check that carefully for yourself, determine the shipping costs and set them properly.
Step 7 - Create and Write Your General Pages
Let's take a short cut, in the SYSO Webshop blueprint (which you also get if you do the Shopify webshop DIY course) we treat every part and page in detail. Think of the essential, universal pages that describe and support your webshop. So what do you have to think about?
Think of the pages: Home, New, Outlet, Shop, About us, Blog and Contact.
Think of the pages: Menu (repeat the main navigation), Customer service, General terms and conditions, Privacy disclaimer, Delivery time & shipping costs, Returns, Warranties & complaints and Payment methods.
All these pages require text, well-written text that fits your brand and branding and is optimized for SEO (for the findability of your webshop in Google).
Step 8 - Fill your Shopify shop with products
Whether you sell 1 or 100 products, you must enter them. Thankfully, Shopify hasn't made that difficult either.
Are you moving to Shopify from another web store software? Then a migration of your database is often possible. Migration in this case means that there are online services that transfer your products and often order history and customer data (securely!) from one system to another system. If you have a lot of products, that's very handy! If you have less than 150 products, then manual transfer of products is often advisable because you then start with a 'clean slate' and no strange coding, etc., moves with it.
Moving from Mijnwebwinkel to Shopify
Mijnwebwinkel is a super nice entry system from Dutch soil. It's easy and the friendly customer service is in Dutch. Yet many shops grow out of their jacket over time, although they find it difficult to move to another system such as Shopify. Why? Especially because it is not possible to easily transfer products, orders and customer data in the normal way. There is simply no possibility for that.
The good news is that we can arrange this for you! Please contact us for more information.
Step 9 - Always do a few test orders yourself
If you have published your Shopify webshop and it is accessible to the rest of the world, always place an order yourself (before you start promoting). Create a test item of €1,- and place an order. Allowing others to test this way is also a good idea.
Step 10 - Your shop is live, now what?
Yes, it can go that fast. Setting up an online store has never been easier than it is now. You are live for almost nothing and your promotion can also be smart, without too much costs via social media and a free Klaviyo or Mailchimp account.
But are you really there now? Does this shop convert? Is the content clear enough? Is your customer coming back? To leave nothing to chance, the next step is actually indispensable. And that is the Shopify webshop DIY online course . With this I will take you by the hand and go into things a lot deeper than with this quick step-by-step plan. Because setting up a shop is not enough with *flats*. We are happy to help you even better than this.
