Do you have an email list and want to add it to your Shopify store? For example, for your newsletter, marketing campaigns, or simply to keep your customer database complete? In this blog post, we'll show you step-by-step how to easily import email addresses in bulk to Shopify.
Why import email addresses?
By adding customers or leads to your Shopify account, you can:
-
Send newsletters via (the free) Shopify Email or an email tool such as Mailerlite
-
Setting up targeted marketing campaigns
-
Better manage your customer data
💡 Note: Make sure you have permission to send these people marketing emails. This is required by the GDPR.
What do you need?
-
A list of email addresses (for example, from a Happlify contest entry form)
-
This handy sample CSV file (you can open this file in Google Sheets)
Step 1: Open the sample file
Use this sample CSV file and open it in Google Sheets.
Why Google Sheets?
Shopify doesn't properly recognize some CSV files created in Excel or Numbers, primarily due to formatting errors or hidden characters. Google Sheets prevents this problem. Your CSV file will remain clean and will be correctly read by Shopify.
Important columns:
-
E-mail
-
First Name (optional)
-
Last Name (optional)
-
Accepts Marketing → set TRUE here if you agree to email marketing
Ready? Then go to File > Download > Comma-separated values (.csv) to export the file.
Step 2: Import into Shopify
-
Log into your Shopify admin
-
Go to Customers in the left menu
-
Click Import at the top right
-
Upload your CSV file
-
Check that the data is displayed correctly
-
Click Import
Your email list has now been added!
💡 Tip: Are you using an email marketing tool?
Are you using an app like MailerLite ? You can import the CSV directly there, or connect the app to Shopify so your lists sync automatically. Good luck!
