If you've been active on Instagram for a while, you've probably heard the term, 'Instagram pod'. Pod means pod, shell, cap or shell that can hold something, Instagrammers for example :-) A pod is a small collection of Instagrammers, a private group of 10 to a maximum of 15 members who want to address (approximately) the same audience and for that reason to collaborate. With the aim of increasing engagement. Higher engagement is important to be seen earlier and better in Instagram's current (adjusted) algorithm.
Why are there pods?
Since Instagram changed the algorithm, the first post on your Instagram Feed is no longer automatically the last posted post from one of your followed accounts (perhaps a direct result of the takeover by Facebook). In short, it is important that your post is seen as often as possible in that timeline by your followers. But how? The more engagement, the sooner/more often your post is shown. And engagement that is just 'attention' of course, likes and reactions. This is how the Instagram pods were created, groups of Instagram users that engage each other's posts.
How do I start a pod?
You can find pods on Instagram related Facebook groups, but you can also start one yourself!
1 - Add anyone you want to add to your pod (preferably a maximum of 15) in a group post on Instagram and tell them what you're up to.
2 - You can have everyone turn on the notifications for the other pod members. When one of the pod members posts a post, the group can immediately take action (like and comment). But the group can also keep in touch via DM messages.
3 - Make sure your response to the post consists of more than four words and does not contain general sentences. See the tips below.
Comment tips for Instagram (which are always good anyway):
1 - Like the post.
2 - Use more than four words in your response.
3 - Avoid too general and short slogans like 'great, super nice, love it, awesome' etc. and a row of emoticons is also not done.
4 - Preferably never respond with the same sentence, make a real response to the post, show that you are involved.
5 - Tag the sender in your comment (@name) for an even more personal touch.
Are pods legal?
Good news, at the time of writing, pods do not go against Instagram policies and this initiative is not penalized in their engagement!
So, now you know everything about pods and you can get started with them yourself if you want. It does take time, which is why pods often only consist of a maximum of 15 accounts. In any case, it is fun to try out if you are already working intensively with Instagram (for example if you participate in the 1000+ Insta target group followers formula ;-))
