With our branding agency Loaded ink, we have been affiliated with the BNO as an agency for about 25 years. I, Mariko, am also a BNO mentor . As designers, we find BNO membership important and now perhaps more than ever. BNO stands for quality and craftsmanship. Every year the BNO publishes a yearbook and this year I, Mariko, was asked to give my vision on AI, which has made enormous progress last year. Here is my answer to the question I received.
Do you think AI advances or weakens the design profession?
“The overload of AI content will devalue creation as we know it.
If we want to maintain the value of what we bring as designers, we must revisit the core of our profession and find new ways. Human attention will be the currency here and not just the 'nice picture', because everyone (especially without a design background) thinks they can create that with AI.
Every technological development that threatens to make humans redundant forces humans to take action and be creative. Once again, it is not about the strongest, but about the one who adapts best. Therefore, see AI mainly as a tool, a smart employee who challenges you as a designer and takes you further than you could ever have imagined.
Finally, we must ask ourselves why we worry that AI will take over design, when we have long lost our soul to marketing (strategy)."
